What Is Actually Triggering Your Back Pain? Find Out in 7 Days

Most back and neck pain does not come from one dramatic injury. It builds from something you do every day without thinking about it: the couch you sink into for two hours of TV, the laptop you use in bed, the car seat on a long commute, the way you carry a bag on the same shoulder every time.

The problem is that nobody can fix what they have not found. Patients tell me “it just started hurting” far more often than “I know exactly what did this.” That is normal. Pain usually shows up hours after the position that caused it, so the connection is easy to miss.

Here is the simple method I give my patients. For seven days, twice a day, write down three things: your pain level from 0 to 10, what you were doing for the last few hours, and how long you were doing it. That is it. By day four or five, most people see a pattern they never noticed. The pain that spikes every evening turns out to follow the recliner, not the workout. The stiff mornings follow the nights with the laptop in bed.

To make this easy I built a free 7-Day Pain Trigger Journal you can download and print at ergolign.com/journal. It gives you the exact format, takes under two minutes per entry, and at the end of the week you have something far more useful than a guess.

Finding the trigger is half the answer. The other half is finding out what the irritation has done to your spine. That is where a precise examination matters. In my Irvine office I use the Gonstead system, which means I do not adjust anywhere until I know exactly which vertebra is involved and which direction it has gone. If you bring your completed journal to your first visit, you have given me a week of evidence most doctors never get to see.

Seven days of honest notes. That is the whole assignment. Whether you bring it to me or to any other provider, you will walk in knowing more about your pain than most people ever learn about theirs.
